Question:
I have two young children, ages nine and seven. They love to go Christmas shopping with me and help pick out gifts for their family and teachers. They like to visit Santa and take in the whole holiday ambiance of our town. My problem is that in every store we go, shopkeepers and clerks give my children Christmas cookies and/or candies, gingerbread men and other holiday sweets.

I don’t allow my children to eat these things as it is not healthy and is very bad for their teeth. They also get hyperactive. I try to circumvent the offering but sometimes they accept the treats before I get the chance to object. Once they have them, I can not take them away without protests. How can I handle this problem?

Answer:
Admittedly, holiday time is a minefield of temptations. Health-conscious people have to be on the alert and use judgment and moderation for this massive assault on the senses of the calorie laden, sugar sopped treats. Try taking your children into department stores. Most do not offer treats.

Although recent medical research has failed to prove that sweets cause hyperactivity in children, we do not recommend that children eat sweets. We agree with you that sweets are not healthy and are laden with fat and sugar and cause cavities in teeth. It is, however, holiday time and you might bend a bit. Be upfront with your children.

Have a talk and decide together what would be a reasonable amount of treats to consume in a day during the holidays. One Christmas cookie, a candy cane? Let them in on the decision to moderate their intake but let them choose one favorite thing each day that is allowed. Good luck.

The next Teeth Withening option is – TRAYS WITH BLEACHING GELS

One of the most affordable and efficient teeth whitening procedures available is the tray with bleaching gel procedure. I would like to let you in on a few little secrets.

First of all, most of the teeth whitening gels dentists have to offer are essentially identical. You will not find much difference between dentists, because only a small number of manufacturers produce the gels.

Secondly, the quality of whitening gels available today in stores is not very good. They may have lost potency during storage and transportation, and they have a low percentage of active ingredients to begin with because they are designed to be “economical”. Only 16% cabamide peroxide is used as the concentration for older whitening gels.

WHAT SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT STEPS, ONCE YOU HAVE THIS NEW WHITENING KNOWLEDGE?

There are four key parts to ensuring that you consistently get the best teeth whitening
results possible.

1. Brush your teeth just before the whitening process. Use an oxygenating toothpaste in combination with a very fine natural polishing agent. You should also use aloe vera to prevent sensitivity and strengthen your gums. By doing this you will ensure that the whitening gel comes in contact with the tooth enamel (as opposed to dental plaque).

2. In order not to waste time, you should use the strongest teeth whitening gel available. Use a teeth whitening gel formula with a 21% concentration of carbamide peroxide, made specifically for reducing tooth and gum sensitivity. The concentration percentage translates to whiter teeth in a short span of time.

3. You can enhance the effect of your teeth whitening, by using an oxygenating oral rinse after treatment. Remember, be sure to avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol because this can chemically interfere with the whitening process and also dry out your mouth.

Lastly, follow this system of teeth whitening for 5 continuous days. You can do the top and bottom separately if you prefer. After it’s finished, you are guaranteed to have a visibly whiter smile.

HOME TEETH WHITENING

We will mention this one time just to let the secret out — currently it is possible (in nearly all situations) to obtain “dental office” quality teeth whitening, in the convenience of your own home. Teeth whitening at home have cut into the business of teeth whitening systems used by dentists, playing the huge advertising budgets for these systems against the comfort of teeth whitening in your own home.

Teeth whitening were quite a complicated process, until a few years ago. Every patient had to have custom-fitted mouthpieces, so home teeth whitening was off the table for most people.

Basically, you will find that there are three ways to perform home teeth whitening.

The first option is brush-on whitening.

With this option, you just brush the formula on and allow it to dry on your teeth. You leave it on overnight. This is a good concept – in principle. Its not complicated, right?

But brush-on teeth whitening is just a shortcut for people who don’t want to spend the time necessary to get it right the first time around.

There are two main problems associated with brush-on teeth whitening:

– It’s effectiveness depends on the teeth whitening formula drying on your teeth. Hypothetically this is fine, but what if the teeth whitening formula gets wet (i.e. saliva and your tongue could easily cause the formula to be removed)? What do you imagine happens when a portion of the teeth whitening formula comes off? You know – the result is uneven whitening. It comes out in patches.

– As far as I can see, the second disadvantage of brush-on teeth whitening is the ingredients. The leading brush-on whitener lists alcohol as its first ingredient. Your breath smells foul after alcohol! Additionally, many brush-on teeth whitening substances include glycerin, which basically takes away the moisture from your teeth enamel, and it is the main reason for most of the teeth whitening sensitivity.

The second option is – strips which are stuck on the teeth

Teeth whitening strips are the second most common type of teeth whitening done at home. The main attraction of home teeth whitening is that the strips are very simple to use, easy to apply and require no preparation. Shortcuts are loved by everyone, correct? The problem is that it is the kind of teeth whitening that you get! Allow me to explain…

Strips that you place on your teeth typically are made up of a top strip and a bottom strip that are put next to the outside area of your teeth. Ponder this for a minute — are your teeth rounded? Obviously they are not, as they have ridges and grooves between each tooth. Well, picture yourself painting a fence, and you only paint the outside surface of the boards, without bothering to do the grooves in between them. That fence would look quite funny, would it not? On the surface is nice new paint, but the spaces between the boards are dull and discolored and still show the old paint. If you do not pay much attention, the same thing can happen to your teeth while using
teeth whitening strips. As your teeth become whiter, your dingy cracks become more noticeable. You might end up with teeth that look like they have small gaps between them. Definitely not what you wanted!

…to be continued…

Teeth whitening in the dental office and home has changed drastically in the past ten years. Basically, there are two ways to make your teeth whiter: dental (in-office) whitening and in-home treatments. Learn some secrets about teeth whitening that you will not hear from your dentist!

PROFESSIONAL TEETH WHITENING IN YOUR DENTIST’S OFFICE

Dentists are VERY happy about the patient who would like to have a teeth whitening procedure done in their office. In the early 1990′s, only one option was available for teeth whitening.

Your dentist would make impressions of your teeth and ship them to a lab, and within 5-10 days, the lab would send back your custom fitted teeth whitening mouthpiece. Next you would be required to sit in the dentist’s chair for an hour or two with a plastic mold full of mild peroxide solution held to your teeth and gums.

After you had gone to the dentist three or four times, you would be told that your teeth had been whitened, and this would usually be the case. Then you would get a five hundred to one thousand dollar bill to pay, and you would go home. And, of course, your teeth were whiter.

Over the past 10 years, a lot of improvements have been made in dental office teeth whitening. The most popular dental teeth whitening procedure is Laser Bleaching, also called Argon Bleaching or power bleaching, and it takes less time. During this teeth whitening procedure, you will have concentrated peroxide gel applied to your teeth. Next, you will sit in your dentist’s chair with your mouth hanging open for an hour. During this time, the teeth whitening paste will have an argon light shone upon it. This will cause a chemical reaction with the peroxide, and the teeth whitening process will be completed.

This is an effective method of teeth whitening. Dentists say that you get whiter teeth from more than one tray application, but that’s because the teeth whitening peroxide has longer contact with your teeth. Of course, the negative aspect of that is that it is expensive – $400 to $900. This is the least you would pay for a proper teeth whitening procedure. Then, you would still have to return in six months to have your teeth whitened again. The alternative to the return visit would be to purchase some whitening items to use at home. Why would you spend 400 to 900 dollars for in office teeth whitening then?

Luckily, technological advances have made teeth whitening simpler and easier to afford.

Teeth are something that can really disclose your true age. Unfortunately, your white teeth normally get darker as you get older, and that bright smile you had when you were twenty years old might not look as good and turn yellow when you are forty years old. This is especially true if you smoke or indulge in tea and coffee. Dentists can bleach teeth at their office quickly, but this can be expensive. Because of this, many people purchase teeth whitening toothpastes to help brighten their dull teeth. But does that toothpaste really help to make your teeth whiter?

Certainly, the advertisements showing shining white smiles would mislead you to think that all you have to do to get a dynamite smile is brush several times with a specific brand of teeth whitening toothpaste. As it frequently happens, these claims are very overrated. If smoking and drinking strong coffee have made your teeth dull after a lot of years, you probably won’t be able to whiten teeth with just toothpaste by itself.

Teeth whitening toothpastes may indeed remove surface stains and make teeth brighter, but they usually don’t create very noticeable changes in color. Teeth whitening toothpastes are made of abrasives and detergents which can scour the outer surface of your teeth. Another common ingredient is carbomide peroxide, which makes enamel lighter. Unfortunately, for some individuals with stained teeth, the problem is much deeper than the enamel on the surface. As people get older, their dentin, or inner layer of the teeth, gets darker; this makes the teeth yellow, especially since the outer enamel layer tends to get thinner. The dentin layer cannot be reached by teeth whitening toothpastes, so that true teeth whitening cannot be achieved simply with toothpaste. The good news is, despite being more rough than normal toothpaste, they are basically thought of as being safe and won’t damage the teeth too much.

Even though it might not work well to get white teeth with toothpaste, if the yellowing hasn’t reached the dentin level, these pastes might assist with eliminating stains on the surface and lighten teeth somewhat. To obtain powerful teeth whitening power, a greater amount of hydrogen peroxide would be required, which is what is included in dental teeth whitening systems, for instance, found in online tooth whitening bleaching products. Even with formulas that have a lot of hydrogen peroxide for tooth bleaching, it might not work for people who have dark dentin.

What’s the bottom line here? Toothpaste alone might not whiten teeth completely, but it can get rid of smile-dulling surface stains, and costs a lot less than bleaching at a dentist’s office.
