Obesity is the most common nutritional disease afflicting dogs and cats today, currently exceeding all deficiency-related diseases combined.

Perhaps the pet food companies have done their jobs too well but the newer foods are probably much tastier to pets than previous ones and encourage eating. Because many people leave food down all day for free-choice feeding, animals consume more and gain weight.

The incidence of obesity increases with age. It is about twice as common in neutered as in nonneutered animals of either sex and, up to 12 years of age, is more common in females than in males. The most commonly obese breeds are the Labrador retriever, terrier, spaniel, dachshund, basset hound and beagle. German shepherd dogs, greyhounds, whippets, and boxers are the least likely to become obese.

Further tying obesity to lifestyle, obesity is almost twice as common in dogs owned by overweight, middle-aged or older individuals. This increased incidence is attributed to reduced physical activity and a greater tendency to feed table food, treats, and snacks.

Recent studies indicate that even moderate obesity can significantly reduce both the quality and the length of an animal’s life. Fortunately, it is a situation that can be remedied.

Neutered animals should be fed a nutritionally balanced, reduced-calorie diet that has been specifically formulated for the high-risk, obesity-prone animal. Weight reduction in most animals can be accomplished with a medically- supervised program of caloric restriction. This requires the genuine, long- term commitment by the pet owner to alter poor feeding habits and provide adequate exercise.

Currently, more than one quarter of dogs and cats weigh more than 115% of their optimum body weight. Studies indicate that these animals are at a greatly increased risk of life-shortening illness. Help your pet overcome these problems and they will lead a longer and more enjoyable life.

Regardless of when you start a weight management program, try
to avoid the “Last Supper” phenomenon. This phenomenon is the
tendency to overeat during the holidays or to overeat the week before
your program begins. This common occurrence results in extra pounds
that take much more time to lose than to gain and cause feelings
of frustration that interfere with the positive mind-set necessary
to commit to healthier eating and physical activity.

Thinking positively and being aware of thoughts is important for successful, long-term weight management. Simply put, thinking about the “big picture” involves setting and committing to realistic and specific goals. It is useful to establish specific goals for eating, exercise, weight , and well-being. Keeping the big picture in focus helps guide the day-to-day decisions.

Summary

Successful weight management can be a difficult process. For most successful weight managers, success comes from sustained changes in eating and physical activity that become incorporated into their daily lifestyles.

The issues covered in this article are intended to help individuals productively plan their New Year’s resolutions for weight management. Learning from past experiences, careful consideration of current circumstances, and thoughtful goal setting may help individuals avoid certain pitfalls.

In determining when you will exercise, ask yourself two questions. First, what does your schedule look like? Are you too busy in the late afternoon or evening to exercise? Will mornings work better for you? Or will you have to alternate between morning and late afternoon or evening workouts?
Second, when do you feel your best? Do you have trouble getting revved up in the morning? If you’re not a morning person,

trouble getting revved up in the morning? If you’re not a morning person, you might perform better at the end of the day when you’re wide awake. Or are you usually dragging by the end of the day? If so, exercise may be the last thing on your mind. Because you’re exhausted, you may not exercise to your fullest potential. You might also risk injury if you’re not paying attention to what you’re doing. Maybe, though, you function better in the morning when you feel more alive and most importantly, more willing to exercise. Best yet, after exercising in the morning, you still have the whole day in front of you and you have that much more energy to tackle the day’s activities.

Ironically, morning exercisers have one big advantage over late-day exercisers: There’s a good chance they’ll make exercise a daily habit. In fact, studies have shown that people who exercise in the morning are more likely to stick with their exercise programs. After all, morning exercisers don’t have to contend with scheduling problems that often occur later in the day. They’ve allotted time to exercise, and for most people, there aren’t many other distractions to prevent them from exercising in the morning.

This advantage is important for someone starting an exercise program. If you’re new to exercise, consider committing to mornings to increase your adherence to your new routine.

There is one exception to choosing a time that suits you best. If you’re training for an athletic event like a marathon or a century, exercise at the time the event will take place. For example, if a cycling century starts at 8 a.m., get used to cycling at that time, especially if you’re used to working out later in the day. This will help your body adjust to the demands of the event.

Whatever time you choose, follow these suggestions to make your workouts more effective and fun.

For morning exercisers:
Lay your clothing out the night before. When your alarm rings, you’ll be able to leap into action without having to gather shoes and clothes.
Set two different alarms. If the snooze button tempts you, set two different alarms, one by your bed and the other across the room.
Buddy up. Exercise is always more fun with a partner so why not add this motivation to your morning workouts? If you’re ever tempted to miss your workout, your buddy will keep you going.

For late afternoon to evening exercisers:
Set your exercise time and stick with it. Don’t let late-day distractions tempt you to neglect your exercise program. Try planning your exercise schedule on Sunday night before your week begins. If you have to make small adjustments, that’s okay, but try not to stray too far away from your goals.
Be careful of outdoor elements. If you’re exercising outdoors, pay attention to the soaring temperatures and high humidity of summer. Your body will drag in the hot weather. You’ll also need to make certain you’re well hydrated in hot weather; drink more water than usual if you’ve been sipping on coffee or caffeinated soft drinks all day. Finally, watch for traffic, especially if you’re exercising around rush hour.

A lot of people have looked at diet pills on commercials, looked at testimonials about how amazing they are, as well as the amount of weight reduction the pills caused and are trying to figure out if diet pills are the solution to their weight troubles. Before you choose to use diet pills, you should investigate them to find out if they are effective and if they have any bad effects.

If you have a lot of extra weight, diet pills can support your weight loss and assist you in reaching your normal weight.

You must remember that commercials seen on TV and online for weight loss items are not researched or verified. You must be extremely careful when deciding whether or not to use diet pills. Your problem with weight might not be solved by the use of these diet pills.

The diet pills will assist with short term weight loss, however the struggle will be keeping the weight off. You should eat healthily and exercise regularly even if you opt to use these diet pills. Diet pills are effective in supporting your weight loss, but they don’t work magic. So if you make the decision that these diet pills are what you need, be sure to use them combined with a good diet and exercise.

Consumers can find a large variety of diet pills on the market. There are three main kinds of diet pills, which are prescribed medications, OTC medicines and herbal supplements.

You can only receive prescription diet pills from your doctor. Your physician will also watch how you are doing with your weight loss and your health when you are using these diet pills.

OTC diet pills can be found at your town chemist, grocery store or on the Internet. The FDA monitors these pills. Their effectiveness is carefully watched as well as the allegations about the items. Nearly all of these pills function by raising your metabolism and making you have more energy.

The third kind are herbal diet pills which you can find in health food and nutrition shops. It’s easier to get these pills, as a prescription is not needed. Herbal diet pills contain several substances that are extremely potent and, if used the right way, can do more than prescription diet pills can.

So if you desire to lose weight and be thin, you can make the effort and try these amazing pills. It is vital that you do some research to make sure that you choose the one that is best for you. Prior to beginning use of a diet pill, you should see your physician.
